Every house in Kerala looks good the week it is painted. The fifth July is the real test. By then the rain, the damp and the afternoon sun have found every weak spot, and you know whether you chose well. A good house exterior colour combination is one you still like after that, and this post is about how to pick it.
Why Trivandrum walls age the way they do
Trivandrum gets long, heavy monsoons, and walls stay damp for weeks. West-facing walls take the worst of it. Strong reds fade fastest in the afternoon sun, and pure white picks up green streaks and mud splash within a season or two. That doesn’t mean you must avoid them. It means your house exterior colour combination has to be chosen with the weather in mind, because the weather will have its say anyway.
Combinations that tend to hold up
These are the ones that age well on Kerala walls.Cream walls with brown/maroon trimmings. Cream cover dust and rain marks more successfully than white, and a deep coloured margin for a window and its sitting-room sills is more generous.
Light grey walls with white window-frames and a charcoal band to the bottom. The majority of stains originate on the plinth, where rain splashes the mud up onto the wall, making a darker band there more discreet.
Sand or soft yellow with terracotta on the wall at the entrance. This is a great colour combination for older home with sloping tiled roof. Works very well next to red tiles.
Near-white with one slightly muted olive wall. It’s ideal for very woodsy plots as the green wall is better at concealing a slight amount of algae than a white wall.
Whichever you like, the safest house exterior colour combination is two main shades and one accent. Add a fourth and the house starts to look busy.
Prep matters more than the brand
A lovely shade on a damp wall will peel, whatever it costs. Seepage and hairline cracks have to be fixed first. We stock primers, putties and Dr. Fixit waterproofing products for this, and we’ll tell you which ones your wall needs and which you can skip. For the paint itself, you can choose from Asian Paints, Berger, Birla Opus, Dulux, Indigo Paints and MRF Vapocure. Even the best house exterior colour combination won’t last five monsoons on a badly prepared wall.
Check the shade on your own wall
Colour cards can fool you. A soft shade on a card looks much stronger across a whole wall, and phone screens change it again. So bring a paint chip if you have one, and tell us which house exterior colour combination you’re leaning towards. We’ll match the chip in the shop.
Then buy a sample tin and paint a patch about a foot square on the wall that gets the most sun. Look at it in the morning, at noon, and after a rain. Ask us about sheen too: matt hides uneven plaster, while a slight sheen lets dirt wash off more easily. It’s a small test, and it can save a full repaint. Do it before you commit to a front elevation colour combination for the whole house.
Honest advice on budget
Tell us your budget at the start. If a mid-range exterior paint will do the job on your wall, we’ll say so, and suggest putting the saved money into waterproofing or primer, where it counts. If the walls are sound and only the colour is tired, you may not need the dearest tin. If they’re chalky or damp, you might. Choosing a house exterior colour combination is a lot easier once the budget is on the table, and we’d rather you spend right once than twice.
Five branches, and we remember your last job
Thayillam Paints has branches at Ulloor, Vanchiyoor, Maruthoor, Karamana and Vazhuthacaud. Between them they cover the northern and central parts of the city and its main commercial areas, so one is always close. As a paint shop in Thiruvananthapuram, we also keep a record of what you bought: the shade, the brand, the finish and a few details of the project. When you come back for a touch-up or the compound wall, we don’t start from nothing, and your new house exterior colour combination can be matched to the old one. The city keeps spreading outward and new houses go up all the time, so we try to keep repeat visits quick.
Finding us
The Ulloor branch is on the main road and easy to spot. Vanchiyoor and Karamana are set back from the main road, so don’t worry if you drive past on the first try. Ring the branch and we’ll tell you the turning and the nearest landmark. Whichever you pick, you’ll find a paint dealer in trivandrum who is happy to sit with you over shade cards, and one of the five is within easy reach from anywhere in the city.
Come and have a look
If you’re still stuck between two shades, drop in with a photo of your house or a chip from your old paint. Have a chat, pick up a sample tin if you like, and take your time. There’s no pressure to buy anything on the day. A good house exterior colour combination is worth a bit of thinking, and we’re happy to think it through with you. Come by whichever branch is nearest, whether you want a paint dealer in trivandrum or only a second opinion on a shade.
